De tentoonstelling BODY WORLDS
& The Story of the Heart is te zien in EXPO Zuidas.
De expositie toont menselijke lichamen die zijn behandeld volgens
de plastinatiemethode van dokter, wetenschapper en anatoom Gunther von Hagens. Met
een collectie van meer dan tweehonderd authentieke menselijke preparaten legt BODY
WORLDS & The Story of the Heart de nadruk op het menselijk hart in al haar facetten.
Hart- en vaatziekten zijn nog steeds de nummer één doodsoorzaak in de westerse wereld. BODY
WORLDS & The Story of the Heart gaat hier dieper op in door bijna bij ieder plastinaat een
verband te leggen met het hart. Naast fysieke aspecten staan ook psychologische vraagstukken
centraal, zoals ‘kun je sterven aan een gebroken hart?’ en ‘wat betekent het als iemand ‘een groot
hart’ heeft?’ Het hart wordt daarnaast beschouwd als het centrum van onze emoties. In dat kader
komen geschiedenis, cultuur en geesteswetenschappen tijdens BODY WORLDS & The Story of
the Heart aan bod.
Over BODY WORLDS
BODY WORLDS (ook bekend onder de Duitse benaming Körperwelten) is de enige anatomietentoonstelling
die gebaseerd is op een donorprogramma. Momenteel beschikt het Institute for
Plastination over een donorbestand van meer dan 13.000 personen wereldwijd, waaronder 60
Nederlanders.
In 2010/2011 trok BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life, een andere expositie van Gunther von
Hagens, in vier maanden tijd 210.000 bezoekers naar Rotterdam. Ruim dertig daarvan gaven zich
op als donor. Wereldwijd bezochten sinds 1995 meer dan 34 miljoen mensen de baanbrekende
anatomietentoonstellingen.
Over plastinatie
De tentoongestelde lichamen en organen zijn geplastineerd. Deze baanbrekende methode werd in
1977 door Gunther von Hagens uitgevonden. Plastinatie is een methode waarbij het weefselvocht
met behulp van een speciaal vacuümproces vervangen wordt door reactiekunststoffen zoals
bijvoorbeeld siliconenrubber. Het ontbindings- en verdrogingproces wordt hierdoor volledig
beëindigd. Door de gepatenteerde plastinatiemethode is het mogelijk de binnenkant van het
menselijk lichaam op een unieke manier te bekijken. In Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS &
The Story of the Heart worden meer dan tweehonderd authentieke menselijke specimens
tentoongesteld, waaronder plastinaten van volledige lichamen, individuele organen,
orgaanconfiguraties en doorzichtige lichaamsdoorsneden
